Semester A:
Moving a feather portfolio
Unit 2 Lesson 8
Your first science portfolio of the year is about force and motion.
You must make a plan to explore balanced forces in motion, balanced forces at rest, and unbalanced forces. Your science lessons give examples using a feather and a straw or a rope during a game of tug-of-war, you do not need to use these examples during your own experiment. Please use your creativity to investigate different forces!
The first step of your portfolio is to make a plan. I've created a worksheet to help guide you through this step. Please click this link and fill out the worksheet (or download the Word Doc or PDF version below). You'll need to upload a copy of the worksheet along with your results.
As you're working, please refer to the rubric at the end of the worksheet to see how I'll be grading your portfolio. You'll need to turn in the planning worksheet along with your results to the dropbox under the assessment for Unit 2, Lesson 8 of your science lessons.

Plants Portfolio- Unit 5, Lessons 6, 7, 8
How does water affect plant growth?
Materials:
- 2 bean plants in cups (lima beans work really well but you can use any beans/seeds)
- Plastic cup with water (if you don't have a cup, you can also grow them in a plastic ziplock. Fold a paper towel in half so that it fits in a sandwich-size ziplock. Put a staple in the middle for the bean/seed to rest on and slide the bean on top of the staple. If you need an example, click here.
- Masking tape (if using a cup)
- Marker
Procedure:
- Plant (at least) two seeds in separate cups or bags. If using cups, you'll need to add soil. If you're using the ziplock, the paper towel will act as the soil!
- Use the tape and marker (or write on the bag) to label one seed as "water" and one as "no water."
- Place both cups/bags in a sunny area, such as a window. If using a ziplock, you can tape the ziplock to the window! Answer this question: Do you think you should place your bean plants in different rooms or near each other? Why?
- Write down your prediction: What do you think will happen and why?
- Each day, add water to the seed that is labeled as "water." Do not add water to the "no water" seed!
- Each day, record what each plant looks like. Do this for five days. Use this worksheet. plant_portfolio_worksheet.pdf
- Think about the prediction you made about what would happen. Did the results of your investigation support your prediction? Record your answer.
- What evidence did you see that supports the idea that plants need water? Record your answer.
Share your investigation
For your portfolio, please include:
- A summary of what you did.
- A description of what happened.
- Your conclusion about a plant's basic needs.
- Photos or drawings of your plants that were grown with water and grown without water.
Decide whether you will create a poster, slideshow, or report. Include everything listed above in your poster, slideshow, or report and submit that for the portfolio on Unit 5, Lesson 8.
